You create your own system. You build habits that fit your daily life, no matter what stage of life you’re in.
Your journey with diabetes begins with you understanding your relationship with the condition. As you start to define what your relationship with diabetes is, you'll begin to lay the foundation to live a healthy and happier life.
The skills you learn on your journey have a purpose. This could include counting carbs, insulin timing, pre-bolusing, carb-to-insulin ratios, understanding data from a continuous glucose monitor (GCM), manual daily injections (MDI), insulin pump therapy, journal entries, finger sticks, etc. The objective is to identify what you do well and what you need to improve upon.
Consistency is about having a daily routine to help you build habits to overcome any situation you face. The more consistency you have within your diabetes, the more in range your blood sugars will be and allow you to avoid the blood sugar rollercoaster ride.
I define this as any action we take that effects our physical health.
What's your exercise routine?
How much sleep do you get every night?
What is your relationship with food?
How much water are you consuming regularly?
Are you stressed?
All of these factors require you to assess your physical health. It's crucial to understand where you stand in each category so that you can be proactive in your management strategy rather than reacting to the diabetes rollercoaster.
The people close to you provide emotional support. This could include family, friends, your significant other or spouse, colleagues, the diabetes community, and even your medical team.
Think about any time in your life that you felt unsupported. You probably felt alone, isolated, depressed, emotional, fearful, or anxious.
Those are all factors you have most likely felt at some point in your diabetes journey.
Having a solid inner circle allows you to be supported when diabetes is challenging and frustrating. It's time to increase your circle of trust.

The Importance of celebrating your wins
I was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) at the age of 25 in 2007. When I was diagnosed, I felt scared, alone, isolated, afraid, and unsupported.
After diagnosis, I shut off my emotions and feelings from everyone, including myself. This led to 3 years of denial and mismanagement. It took special people in my life to snap me out of denial. I started to take more of an interest in my health and diabetes. I began to experiment with different management strategies and started to work closer with some people living with type 2 diabetes. This inspired me to continue learning and evolve so I could help others not live as I did.
Most people are sent to the emergency room with a blood sugar of 400+ at diagnosis.
Not me.
I was given a fast-acting insulin pen and glucose monitor and sent on my way. I remember trying to give myself a shot that first night, thinking,
"is this my life?"
I created "More Than A1C" to support those like YOU living with diabetes.
My vision is for every person living with diabetes to be empowered to live life on their own terms instead of fighting against this condition.
